What an SGS Test Report Actually Certifies

An SGS report certifies that a specific sample passed a specific test against a specific standard on a specific date — nothing broader. It is not a blanket approval of a brand, a product line, or everything a company sells. That narrowness is exactly why the reports are useful, and exactly why "SGS tested" printed on a page tells you almost nothing until you ask what was tested.

SGS is one of the large independent testing, inspection and certification organisations. Sellers commission them to test samples. The value lies in the independence — but only if you can see what the test actually covered.

If a seller can answer all four, the claim is doing real work. If they can only show a logo, you're looking at a design element rather than evidence — and that's true regardless of which testing house's logo it is.

What these tests typically look at for drinkware

For food-contact vessels, the relevant tests are generally about migration: whether anything transfers from the material into food or drink under defined conditions. Testing bodies simulate contact using specified liquids, temperatures and durations, then measure what has moved into the liquid against the limits the standard sets.

This is why the standard cited matters more than the testing house named. The standard defines what counts as a pass. A test against a rigorous food-contact standard tells you something substantial; a test against a standard designed for a different product category tells you very little about your cup, no matter how reputable the laboratory.

It's also why material simplicity helps. A vessel made from one solid uncoated metal presents one material for evaluation. A vessel with a lining introduces a second material and a second question — how it behaves as it wears, which a test on a new sample cannot answer. That's a structural limitation of testing new samples, not a criticism of any particular report.

What a test report cannot tell you

Being honest about the limits, including on our own reports:

  1. It doesn't cover every unit made. A sample was tested. Consistency across production depends on the manufacturer's process control, which is a separate question.
  2. It doesn't predict ageing. Tests run on samples in known condition. How a coating behaves after three years of dishwashing isn't what a new-sample test measures.
  3. It doesn't cover items outside its scope. A report on one vessel says nothing about a different product from the same brand.
  4. It doesn't expire visibly. An old report may still be honest and still be outdated if materials or suppliers have since changed.
  5. It isn't a quality rating. Passing a safety standard is a floor, not a ranking. It says the item didn't fail a defined test — not that it's well made.

That third point is where most misleading marketing sits. A brand tests one product, then displays the logo across an entire catalogue. Nothing false has been stated, and the impression given is still wrong.

Takeaway: a report is a snapshot of one sample at one moment. Treat it as evidence about that, not as a guarantee about everything.

Why uncoated material simplifies the question

The limitations above hit hardest on layered products, because the thing most likely to change with age is the layer.

With a solid uncoated vessel, the material at the surface on day one is the same material years later. There's no lining that could wear through, no bond between two materials that could fail, and no second material to evaluate separately. It doesn't make a vessel automatically better — plenty of lined products are perfectly sound — but it does mean a test on the material tells you more about the vessel's whole life, because the material isn't going to change into something else.

Test reports aren't the only external evidence, but the different signals prove very different things — and they're often presented as though they were interchangeable.

Read down that middle column and a pattern appears: each signal covers a narrow slice. A design award says nothing about safety. A patent says nothing about whether the patented feature is in the item in your basket. Reviews cover the years a lab test can't, but no customer can tell you what an alloy contains.

This applies to our own credentials. You don't need to become an expert in testing standards. Ask three things and the picture clears quickly.

First, ask what was tested — if the answer isn't a specific product, treat the claim as branding. Second, ask which standard — a named, relevant standard is a good sign, silence is not. Third, ask whether you can see the report; a company confident in its testing will show it, and reluctance tells you something on its own.
