How to Read a Drinkware Spec Sheet

Guide card on reading a drinkware spec sheet, showing which fields carry real information and which phrases are meaningless

Most drinkware spec sheets mix three kinds of statement: verifiable facts, unverifiable claims, and phrases engineered to sound like facts. Learning to sort them takes about five minutes and saves you from the entire category of products that specify enthusiastically and disclose nothing.

The single most useful habit: notice what isn't listed. Omissions are more informative than anything present, because a genuinely good number gets published.

The retention claim problem

Heat retention figures are the most quoted and least useful numbers in drinkware, because a figure without conditions can't be compared to anything.

Retention depends on how full the vessel is, how hot the drink was, the ambient temperature, whether the vessel was preheated, and how often it's opened. Change any one and the number changes substantially. So a bare figure is a marketing statement dressed as a measurement.

A useful claim states the conditions: fill level, starting temperature, ambient temperature, and the threshold being measured. With those, you can at least compare two products tested similarly — and you can sanity-check whether the test resembles your actual use.

The words that signal absence

Certain constructions reliably indicate that the thing named isn't actually there. Once you see them, they're hard to unsee.

  1. "-style" or "-effect" — as in "titanium-effect finish". This means it looks like titanium and isn't.
  2. "-infused" or "-enhanced" — implies a trace of something without any stated quantity. Ask how much and the answer is usually unavailable.
  3. "-coated" or "-plated" — accurate and important. A coating of a material is a fundamentally different product from the solid material, with a different failure mode.
  4. "-grade" — as in "aerospace-grade". Often meaningless without naming the actual specification, since "grade" implies a standard that isn't cited.
  5. "Premium", "professional", "advanced" — carry no information at all. Not dishonest, just empty.
  6. "BPA-free" on a metal product — true and irrelevant, since BPA relates to certain plastics. Its presence on a metal vessel suggests a spec sheet padded to look fuller.

Capacity, and why two numbers are better than one

Capacity looks like the least ambiguous field on a spec sheet and quietly isn't.

A stated capacity is usually measured to the brim, which is not how anyone uses a vessel. Fill a bottle to the actual brim and closing the lid displaces liquid over the edge; with a sealed flask, you also need air space for the lid to seat. Practical capacity is meaningfully lower than brim capacity, and how much lower depends on the lid design.

This matters when comparing products. Two vessels both listed at the same capacity can hold noticeably different amounts in practice if one has a deep-seating lid and the other doesn't. It also explains the common disappointment of a bottle that seems smaller than its number.

A good spec sheet gives both figures, or states which one it's quoting. Most give one and don't say. When comparing, the practical test is to look at stated capacity alongside height and base diameter — if the dimensions seem small for the claimed volume, you're probably looking at a brim figure.

The same caution applies to insulated vessels specifically, where the double wall means external dimensions are always larger than the internal volume suggests. Takeaway: assume a quoted capacity is to the brim and that real usable volume is lower. Compare dimensions alongside it.

Reading the omissions

What's missing tells you more than what's present, because favourable numbers get published.

No weight stated often means it's heavy. Weight is trivially measurable, so its absence usually reflects an unflattering answer rather than an oversight.

No base diameter is common and frustrating, since base diameter is what determines cup holder fit. Height alone doesn't tell you.

No statement about the interior is the most significant omission. If a vessel had an uncoated interior, that would be a selling point and it would be stated. Silence usually means there's a coating the seller would rather not discuss.

No mention of replacement parts tells you the expected lifespan. If gaskets and lids can't be bought separately, the vessel is designed to be discarded when a wear part ages — which is worth knowing before you pay for something described as lasting a lifetime.

A five-minute assessment

Run any product through this and you'll know where you stand.

First, find the material statement. Named material with purity or grade is good; adjectives are not. Second, find the interior statement. Explicitly uncoated is good; a named coating is at least honest; silence is a red flag. Third, check base diameter and weight are both present — two easily measured numbers whose absence suggests selective disclosure.

Fourth, test any retention claim for conditions. No conditions, no information. Fifth, look for a warranty document rather than a warranty word. And sixth, ask one question by email — something specific and answerable, like whether the interior is coated.
